Pentax K100d Super or Canon Rebel T2?
I am debatting on geting a SLR or a DSLR. Apparently the Pentax K100d Super is a really good beginners camera and it has that anti shake, but the Canon Rebel K2 is suppose to be a good entry level SLR. Im confused. Should i start off by learning with a K2 or should i get the Pentax K100d?

Definitely go with a DSLR. I have a Sony a100 I’ve had for over a year now I love it. Sony now has 3 more DSLR cameras out you may want to check out as well. They all have anti shake if that is something you are looking for. As fun and interesting as film cameras can be it’s a waste of money in this day and age. 1) your going to end up with digital at some point anyway might as well start now. 2) Why add the cost of film and developing to an already expensive, though rewarding hobby.
Go DSLR. I work for Ritz Camera, and it’s going to give you the most options for now. You don’t want to put the money into an SLR, and in 6 months decide that you want to go digital. The K100D is an amazing camera, and on the plus side, you can use any Pentax lens EVER made. In case you aren’t aware that’s like 5 million lenses. It is a little bit confusing (ie menus and such) but if you take the time to thoroughly read your manual, and can maybe squeeze in a few classes, you’ll be golden. If you are looking at other DSLRS, for beginners, I prefer the Nikon D40 and D60. Ultra easy to use, lots of great features, and under $700…Also (not to plug one company over another, but it’s a good deal) there’s a deal for a two lens kit (18-55mm and 55-200mm) that comes with the two lenses, a Nikon camera bag and two Nikon school DVD’s for $100 more. Which is a really good deal, considering the second lens is a $199 lens. But, on the issue of the K2 (which is a great starting point film SLR) vs. the K100D, go with the Pentax.
Canon, just stick with a Canon!!! DSLR is all pros use nowdays and you dont want to be wishing in 6 months time that you would have bought a Digital SLR!!! A good lens to go with the canon is the 50mm f2.8, its a cheapy but gives OUTSTANDING pics. No zoom on this les but its so clear you can always crop, and the 2.8 gives a great blurry background and sharp foreground image!!
If you are just beginning with photography, I suggest a Pentax K1000 100% manual film camera with a 50mm f1.7 lens and the Owner’s Manual.
A copy of "How To Select & Use Pentax SLR Cameras" by Carl Shipman and a copy of "Object & Image: An Introduction To Photography, Third Edition" by George M. Craven will be very useful as you learn about f-stops and shutter speeds and ISO (called ASA in the older books). You’ll also begin learning about light and composition from these books.
Once you’ve mastered the K1000 then you will be ready to transition to a DSLR like the Pentax K200D or K20D. The K100D Super has been discontinued.
Yes, there will be costs associated with using film but if you buy your film on-line from:
Adorama (http://www.adorama.com) or
B&H Photo (http://www.bhphotovideo.com) its cheaper. Most 1 Hour labs run specials so you can save money on processing and printing.
Films I use on a regular basis are Fujifilm Superia Reala 100, Kodak Portra 160VC, Fujifilm PRO400H, Kodak Portra 400VC. For portraits I like Kodak Portra 160NC.
For those times when I dabble in black & white I like Ilford XP2 Super 400 or Kodak BW400N. Both are C-41 compatible so your 1 Hour lab can easily process and print them.
I don’t know why Pentax cameras aren’t more popular. I’ve owned several over the years and have always been happy with them. I started with the Optio 30 model and then moved on from there. All have plenty of features and work well. A nice camera. Never had any problems.
I’m technologically illiterate, but never ceases to amaze me the constant innovation of the technology in Canon. I enjoyed reading posts about Canon best price, accessories. I have one and I love it!
