Best entry level DSLR?
Hi,
I would like to buy an entry level DSLR, probably from canon or nikon. Price is not a restriction, but I would expect excellent image quality and a larger frame. I will be mostly using the camera for outdoors (landscape, scenery), portraits and close up (macro) images.
Please pour your suggestions.
Thanks
Gnans

Nikon D3000 is a good entry level camera take good sharp picture quality or if you want better one then Nikon D5000 or Canon Rebel T1i are good choice.

Although the Pavlovian response is always "NIKON!" "CANON!" there are other choices. Don’t overlook Sony and Pentax, especially the Pentax K-x.
The Sony A330 has arguably the best Live View currently available plus two features not found in the often-recommended Nikon D3000 and D5000.
Sony has a focusing motor and their version of Image Stabilization (IS) in the camera body. Since Sony uses the old Minolta Maxxum "A" lens mount a Maxxum AF lens made in 1985 will auto focus on any Sony DSLR. Since the IS is also in the camera body that 25 year old Maxxum lens becomes, in effect, an IS lens – as does any lens used. With a Nikon D3000 or D5000 you have to buy Nikon AF-I or AF-S lenses if you want auto focus since neither one has an in camera focusing motor. Nikon and Canon have their versions of IS in some – but not all – of their lenses so you pay for it again and again.
The Pentax K-x is one feature-packed camera. It has Live View, video capability, double/multiple exposure capability (seldom found in cameras costing 2 to 3 times as much), an in camera focus motor and Pentax’s version of IS is also in the camera body. Since Pentax still uses the "K" lens mount from 1975, any lens ever made in that mount can be used. Yes, there are limitations when using a 35 year old manual focus lens but it can be used – and it becomes an IS lens.
The Nikon D5000 has Live View and video capability but no in camera focus motor or IS or double/multiple exposure capability.
Here are some comparison prices from B&H:
Sony A330 w/18-55mm lens, $549.99 with a $50.00 "Instant Savings". $499.99 final cost.
Nikon D3000 w/18-55mm lens, $549.95 with a $50.00 "Instant savings". $499.95 final cost.
Nikon D5000 w/18-55mm lens, $749.95 with a $50,00 "Instant Savings". $699.95 final cost.
Pentax K-x w/18-55mm lens, $513.95. For a mere $14.04 more than the Nikon D3000 you get Live View, video capability, double/multiple exposure capabilty, an in camera focusing motor and in camera IS. For $185.96 LESS than the Nikon D5000 you gain an in camera focusing motor, in camera IS and double/multiple exposure capability.
The Sony A330 (at the same cost as the Nikon D3000) adds Live View and an in camera focusing motor and in camera IS.

Now you decide for yourself which of these cameras offers you the most features for your money. If I were buying a new camera today my money would go for the Pentax K-x just for the double/multiple exposure capability – with the in camera IS and focusing motor also being important considerations.
