So I have been wanting to upgrade from my regular point-and-shoot to a nice DSLR. Having video recording capabilities is very important and is really the deal breaker for me on whether or not I would want the camera. I just really have NO idea what is out there right now and what I should be focusing on if this is gonna be my first ever DSLR.
I have heard about the Nikon D300S with video capabilities… Isn’t that one of the higher end options though?
Is there any specific model anyone can recommend that would be a great entry-level DSLR but also have HD video capabilities?
I am an amateur looking to level up from a point-and-shoot camera to my first DSLR. The Nikon D3000 seems like it’s a good deal for an entry-level camera. However, there seems to be rumors of a Nikon D4000, which will be an entry-level DSLR, coming out sometime soon even though it hasn’t even been a year since the release of the D3000. Should I wait to see if the D4000 will be released or is now an okay time to purchase a D3000?
Also, which is better for a beginner–the D3000 or the D5000?
Any other entry-level cameras I should take a look at? I seem to be a bit more attracted to Nikons (don’t know why exactly). Also, what are the necessary accessories I need to purchase along with my DSLR? I plan on getting one with a starter kit.
Thanks! Any other tips/advice/warnings/etc. about the D3000 or other comparable cameras are appreciated.
One more–the D3000 is apparently the replacement for the D40, yes?

I was thinking of buying an entry level dslr. I managed to shortlist two Camera models one from Nikon and the other one from Canon.
I need help deciding which one I should pick considering the fact that I m new to the entire photography thing.
Improved functionality and a streamlined design make this digital camera cutting edge in SLR technology. Nikon’s D3 Digital SLR comes with high quality features including FX-format CMOS sensor, 12 megapixels, wi-fi remote control, and a wide screen preview option. With 9 frames per second, the world’s fastest SLR in its class could be yours for 99.00.
I am trading my Nikon D40 for either a USED Canon 20D (body only) or a NEW Canon XSI (18-55 F3.5-5.6 IS). Both cameras are going to be about the same price 20D = 5 or 0 … XSi= 0
I have never held any of these two cameras so I want some advice.
(btw I’m 5′2 and have small hands if that makes a difference)
I am graduating from the entry level DSLR so I want a camera that I can control the features more. I know Canon 20D is a semi-pro camera so its no question I can manipulate more of its features. Is the XSI considered semi-pro.. or is it still entry level? How does manual mode compare to the 20D?
If you are knowledgeable, what kind of lenses would compliment these cameras (esp. the Canon 20D.. if I end up getting it.. since I would need an everyday lense as well as a prime)? (my budget for now is only 0ish a lens). I KNOW I will get the f1.8 though (because its very cheap).
***I’m thinking of getting one of these cameras because I know in the future I will upgrade my lenses more than I would upgrade my body. And the Nikon D40 just has too many limitations when it comes to lens choice.
I am just beginning to get into photography. And, as i do want a good entry level camera, i also want a camera that i can grow with and continue to progress with. Is this possible with this camera? Because if it is just a completely beginner dslr, i wont have more money to buy a better one a later.
i’m really attracted to K-x because it comes in red and 1/6000 shutter speed and it’s powered by AA batteries too. also, it’s not very expensive compared to 550D or D5000 (my other bets). anyone have some inputs?
the only thing that bothers me with K-x though is that i might have trouble looking for lenses or other accessories in the future… also, there might not be a lot of service centers for that brand here in the philippines.
please share your thoughts. thanks
that’s actually a very wise suggestion but don’t you think the d3000 or the 1000d is a bit too underpowered?
